Oil Mist
Oil mist consists of airborne oil droplets. The size of these ranges anywhere from 1 – 10 µm. This means they are the same size as bacteria. Oil mist is normally formed in processes where oil or oil-based coolant is used for lubrication or chip removal and the most common and effective way to capture oil mist is to extract the polluted air as close to the source as possible. Oil Smoke
Oil smoke, like oil mist, consists of airborne oil droplets. The difference is that these particles are smaller than the oil mist particles and they usually come in larger amounts. The size of the oil smoke particles ranges from 0,1 – 1 µm. The threshold limit for how much oil smoke that is allowed in a workshop is normally the same as for oil mist. Dust
Dust formed during a variety of applications where dry materials are processed. For example, during welding, laser and plasma cutting, dry grinding, sanding or varnishing. Dust consists of airborne particles up to 100 microns, which is equivalent to one tenth of a millimeter. Larger particles that not airborne are also considered to be dust particles.
